My ancestors have been born in America for almost three hundred years, but I am not considered "native" American. More specifically, ancestors with the same surname; quite a few with the same first name, in fact. We were, I imagine, on the lam when we got here and one step ahead of thundering poverty. The concept of "human" ownership is anathema to all we are taught. Good deeds are what other people do, "the right thing" is expected, nay required in my family ...how/why would you do otherwise?
Not puritans, not Libertines, just people getting by in the way they'd been taught; asking mostly to be left alone. Not antisocial, not social climbers, not interested in fame for it's own sake, but rather introverted with respect to acclaim. Important people make bigger mistakes. Comfortable people don't force decisions that aren't necessary, or wanted.
